Essential Tips for Maintaining Your Plantation Shutters

Posted on

Plantation shutters are a great option for window treatments, looking excellent in many different rooms of your home. However, to keep them in this good condition, you need to clean and maintain them. Here are some tips for doing that.

Dust and Vacuum the Shutters

If you perform routine maintenance on the shutters to keep them clean, you won't have a lot of scrubbing to do later on. Try to remember to remove the dust from the shutters with the attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Every time you are dusting other furniture in your home, it is a good idea to go ahead and dust the shutters as well. This helps to avoid build-up and keep them as clean as possible. When it comes time for deep cleaning, the job will be much easier.

Wipe Them Down With Polish

In between dusting sessions, you can also wipe them down, letting the polish coat the wood and protect it from scratches and other types of damage. Either use a polishing cloth that already has wood polish on it, or use a spray and wipe the slats of the shutters with a microfiber cloth. Microfiber is a good material for shutters since it is lint-free, so nothing is going to be left behind. Make sure after wiping them down, they feel dry to the touch. If not, grab a clean and dry cloth to wipe them once more until they feel dry. This will help to prevent the growth of mildew and mould on the wood.

Wash the Shutters Routinely

A little less often, you want to wash the grime and remaining build-up from the shutters. You can either do this when they are still hanging, or pull them down for a more deep cleaning. A good time to wash the shutters is when you are cleaning the windows. You can remove the shutters, clean the windows inside and out, clean the shutters, then replace them. It helps to remind you when this needs to be done. Some shutters have little detail work or crevices in the wood slats. If this is the case for yours, yous hold also go over them with a toothbrush dipped in water. This will help to clean out all these crevices and get them as clean as possible.

Plantation shutters can last a long time with regular cleaning and maintenance. Remember to keep them dust-free and wash regularly for optimal performance.
